Musharraf seeks Indian PM talks

The President of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf, has said that he hopes to have substantive talks with the Indian prime minister later this week.

Gen Musharraf said that he hoped to meet Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Cuba which began this week.

Speaking to reporters in Islamabad before his departure, he said he wanted the talks to be "result-oriented".

The proposed meeting will be the first since the Mumbai train bombings.

The bombings in July killed 183 people, and India blamed Pakistan for them, a charge dismissed by Islamabad as baseless.

The president said his talks with Mr Singh carried "much importance".

"I hope and will make full efforts to make the talks substantive, so that these are result-oriented," he said before leaving Pakistan.
