A senior official at one of the Scotland's largest local authorities has resigned after being suspended amid a probe into data on teacher numbers.

North Lanarkshire Council confirmed in November that Andrew Sutherland, the executive director of learning and leisure services, had been suspended.

It said the move had been taken pending an investigation on the accuracy of data on numbers of teaching staff.

The council has now confirmed that Mr Sutherland has resigned.

In a statement, the authority said: "North Lanarkshire Council can confirm that Andrew Sutherland, the executive director of learning and leisure services has resigned from his post and is no longer an employee of the council.

"The council will not issue any further comment on this confidential employment matter."
