Brian Reader, the oldest member of the gang, fell ill at Belmarsh prison in south-east London, where he is awaiting sentence for his role in the £14m raid, sources said. Brian Reader was being treated for “a number of issues” at the Queen Elizabeth hospital in south-east London, according to his solicitor, Hesham Puri.
Reader, 76, admitted conspiracy to commit burglary at the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit company in London, believed to be biggest burglary in British history. Puri said it was unlikely his client would be able to attend the sentencing hearing next month for his role in the £14m raid, believed to be England’s biggest burglary.
It is understood Reader, 76, had various outstanding health issues when he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary in September.
