Quynh Le, from the BBC's Vietnamese Service, said the incident happened at about lunchtime, local time, and the operation to rescue the bodies had taken about three hours.
The vice chairman of Lam Dong province, who was in charge of the rescue operation, told our reporter that according to the initial investigation, the tourists tried to go through the forest to reach the canyons.
"Apparently on the way there one person slipped on the stream and unfortunately he took the other two people with him," he said.
"When the police came down the waterfalls and found the bodies, they said that they found helmets and safety jackets, but apparently there were no ropes on the bodies, which is a very dangerous thing to do."
Authorities had stressed that this was just the initial investigation, and emphasised that the investigation was still ongoing, he added.
Ongoing investigation
Police are investigating whether the man with the tourists was a local resident or a tour guide.
"Many tours were sold cheaply for around $25 for a trip. We need caution here, but it is likely that this person is one of the guys who stays in the area and tried to sell the tours to Western tourists," our journalist added.
The bodies are to be moved from from Lam Dong province to Ho Chi Minh City, he added.
