JOHANNESBURG — A South African university says several students were injured in a clash with campus guards who fired rubber bullets and tear gas.

The African News Agency quoted a spokesman of the Mafikeng campus of North West University as saying the clash occurred Wednesday.

Campus spokesman Koos Degenaar says the clash occurred after students disrupted an event at which leaders of the student council were inaugurated.

A number of South African universities have been hit by unrest in recent days. Student grievances include housing costs and alleged racism by university administrators.
