Part of a popular Ceredigion beach has been sealed off after an unidentified yellow wax-type material was found.

Environmental health officials wearing chemical suits and firefighters cleared the substance from Cwmtydu beach, near New Quay.

Ceredigion Council said samples had been sent away for analysis and the results are expected back on Wednesday morning.

A council spokeswoman said police had cordoned off part of the beach.

The spokeswoman added that a "yellow, waxy-type material" was found on Tuesday morning.

She said the coastguard, fire service, police and staff from Ceredigion Council had worked together.

"Samples of the material have been sent away and we are waiting for the results to be returned tomorrow morning," she said.

Popular with smugglers centuries ago and U-boat commanders in World War I, Cwmtydu beach is also a breeding ground for endangered Atlantic grey seals.
