A man shot dead by police during a suspected armed robbery in Kent died from multiple gunshot wounds, an inquest has heard.

One of the officers who shot Robert Haines, 41, of Ashford, was also involved in the Jean Charles de Menezes shooting at Stockwell in July 2005.

Mr Haines died in hospital after the incident at the Nationwide Building Society in New Romney on 31 October.

The inquest was opened and adjourned at Ashford Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Coroner's Officer David Lewis told the court a post-mortem examination held on 3 November showed that Mr Haines, described as a company director, died from multiple gunshot wounds.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is conducting an investigation into his death.

Three men have been charged in connection with the incident at the building society.

David Jenkins, 60, from Ashford, his son Dean Jenkins, 39, of Rainham and Ben Greham, 21, of Upper Norwood, south London, are each charged with robbery and possessing a firearm.

They have been remanded in custody until 17 November, when they will appear at Maidstone Crown Court.
