A Tory candidate has joked about the "wet look" of Sir Paul McCartney's divorce lawyer after she was soaked in court by the former Beatle's ex-wife.

Glyn Davies, prospective parliamentary candidate for Montgomeryshire, made his comments on his blog after Heather Mills poured water on Fiona Shackleton.

The ex-Welsh assembly member said the lawyer should "try wearing a T-shirt".

Lib Dem MP Jenny Willott criticised Mr Davies, but he said he hoped there was "still room for humour in politics".

Ms Mills has admitted emptying a jug of water over the head of Sir Paul's lawyer at the end of their divorce case.

Ms Shackleton left the High Court in London with wet hair after the hearing on Monday, when Ms Mills was awarded £24.3m from the former Beatle.

I have to say that the wet bedraggled look bestowed upon Ms Shackleton a wanton and rather fetching appearance Glyn Davies, Conservative, in his blog

That was well below the £125m Ms Mills had sought, and she had criticised Ms Shackleton's handling of the case.

Their showdown prompted a web response from Mr Davies, who was Tory AM for Mid and West Wales for eight years, and is now president of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales.

He wrote on Tuesday: "From the before and after photographs in today's newspapers, I have to say that the wet bedraggled look bestowed upon Ms Shackleton a wanton and rather fetching appearance.

"If she wants my advice, I'd recommend she considers adopting the wet look on a regular basis.

"She might even try wearing a T-shirt as well.

But Ms Willott, the Lib Dem MP for Cardiff Central, said his comments were "inappropriate" and he should not have published them.

She said: "I'm surprised Glyn decided to publish these comments - even if he thinks it, I would have thought he should have shown more sense and not written such inappropriate comments online.

"It does suggest same old Tories."

In reply Mr Davies said: "I hope there is still room for humour in politics."
