A RNLI lifeboat, the police and a Coastguard search-and-rescue helicopter were called to Cullercoats Bay at about 20:00 GMT on Saturday. Northumbria Police said she had been rescued from the side of the bay by a member of the public.

In a statement issued before she died, Northumbria Police said she had been rescued from the side of the bay by a member of the public. A RNLI lifeboat, a Coastguard search-and-rescue helicopter and police were called to the scene at about 20:00 GMT.

Before the girl died Ch Insp Paul Knox issued a warning that "people can be taken unawares by the strength of the waves" when it is dark and cold.
"People should always be careful around water and if the sea is looking rough with waves pounding onto the pier, we would advise people to be particularly cautious and keep their distance," he said.
