Burkina Faso arrests over 'plot to free coup leader' Burkina Faso's Roch Marc Christian Kabore sworn in as president
(about 2 hours later)
About 20 soldiers have been arrested in Burkina Faso for plotting to free the leader of September's coup, Gen Gilbert Diendere, officials have said. A former banker has been sworn in as Burkina Faso's president in front of thousands of cheering supporters.
The 20 were arrested during a raid in the capital, Ouagadougou, on Monday, Prime Minister Isaac Zida said. Roch Marc Christian Kabore won elections last month, the first since long-serving ruler Blaise Compaore was ousted in a popular uprising last year.
The group had also planned to free other coup plotters, and re-establish the elite presidential guard which Gen Diendere headed, he added. Mr Kabore was an ally of Mr Compaore before the two fell out.
Gen Diendere was charged in October for staging the short-lived coup. About 20 soldiers were detained on Monday for plotting to free the jailed leader of September's short-lived coup, Gen Gilbert Diendere, officials said.
He gave up power after seven days, following mass protests and international pressure. Several African heads of state attended Mr Kabore's inauguration in the capital, Ouagadougou.
Former banker Roch Marc Christian Kabore is due to be sworn in as president. Mr Kabore said he would defend the constitution and "ensure justice for all".
He won elections last month, the first since long-serving ruler Blaise Compaore was ousted in a popular uprising last year. He once served as Mr Compoare's prime minister, but gained popularity after opposing his bid to change the constitution and run for a third term.
Gen Diendere was linked to Mr Compaore. Mr Compaore fled to Ivory Coast after being forced out of office.
In his reaction to the arrest of the soldiers, Mr Kabore said that "justice will run its course". Gen Diendere, a powerful ally of the ousted president, staged a coup in September.
"We have proceeded with arrests to make them understand that a project such as theirs, even before it has been carried out, is doomed to fail," Mr Zida said at a press conference. He was forced to return power to a transitional government seven days later, after the army sided with protesters opposed to the coup.
At least 57 people, including about 20 presidential guard officers, are being held in relation to the September's incident. Gen Diendere was charged in October with 11 crimes, including threatening state security. He denies the charges.
Both Gen Diendere and Mr Compaore, who is in exile in Ivory Coast, have been charged with the 1987 murder of former President Thomas Sankara. The 20 soldiers accused of trying to free him were arrested during a raid in Ouagadougou, outgoing Prime Minister Isaac Zida said.
The group had also planned to free other coup plotters, and re-establish the elite presidential guard which organised the short-lived coup, he added.
