Calm prevails after Iraq troops routed IS from Ramadi center Iraqi state TV says PM has arrived in IS-free city of Ramadi
(34 minutes later)
BAGHDAD — An Iraqi military commander says the center of the western city of Ramadi is mostly calm, a day after government troops routed Islamic State militants from the area and recaptured a key government complex. BAGHDAD — Iraq’s state TV says Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has arrived in Ramadi to hail the city’s liberation from Islamic State militants.
Brig. Gen. Ahmed al-Belawi told The Associated Press on Tuesday that engineering teams were clearing bombs from the streets and nearby buildings. Al-Belawi says sporadic clashes are underway in outlying parts of the city. The TV did not elaborate on al-Abadi’s visit Tuesday to the Anbar provincial capital but an Iraqi commander, Brig. Gen. Ahmed al-Belawi, told The Associated Press that the prime minister kicked off his tour with meetings with security and provincial officials.
Iraqi forces, backed by U.S.-led airstrikes, drove IS militants out of the city center on Monday and raised the Iraqi flag over the government complex. But military officials said insurgents were still holed up in various pockets of the city. Ramadi fell to the Islamic State group in May, marking a major setback for Iraqi forces and the U.S.-led campaign.
