The blast occurred at the Italian restaurant Luna Caprese in central Islamabad, police official Mohammad Ishtiaq told the AFP news agency. The blast occurred at the Italian restaurant Luna Caprese in the centre of the Pakistani capital.
"One wall of the restaurant has partly collapsed and many people have been injured," he said. It is the first attack that has apparently targeted foreigners in Islamabad since 2002, analysts say.
It is the first attack that has targeted foreigners since 2002, correspondents say. Two foreign diplomats, one from the US and one from the UK, were among the injured, their governments said.
"It's a very bad situation," an employee at Luna Caprese told AFP. The restaurant is located in a busy shopping area, and is one of the few that serve alcohol in Islamabad.
"There are lots of injured people who have lost their limbs and legs," the employee said. Witnesses said Saturday evening's explosion occurred in a garden at the back of the restaurant, leaving a crater in the ground and blowing out the windows.
"It was deafening," a waiter at the restaurant, Tariq Mahmood, told Reuters news agency.
"We pulled out at least eight people from the wreckage. Most of them were foreigners," he said.
Police evacuated the restaurant and closed off the building following the explosion.
