It said in a statement: "An independent rigorous inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Michael Todd's tragic death is currently being handled on behalf of the coroner by North Wales Police.
"HM Inspectorate are in liaison with that constabulary and are monitoring developments closely."
The statement added that the acting chief constable Dave Whatton and the chairman of Greater Manchester Police Authority had asked Sir Paul Scott-Lee to conduct an examination of the circumstances "to ensure that nothing in the conduct of Mr Todd's personal life had adversely impacted on the professional discharge of his duties as chief constable."
