Severe wind storm strikes Atlanta Two killed as storms maul Georgia
(about 14 hours later)
A severe wind storm has hit the centre of the US city of Atlanta, causing damage to skyscrapers, hotels and two sports arenas. A state of emergency has been declared in the US state of Georgia after two people died in storms, a day after a tornado hit the city of Atlanta.
National Weather Service officials said they were unsure if the 60mph (97km/h) winds in the city, in the state of Georgia, were caused by a tornado. Emergency officials confirmed one woman died in Polk County and another in Floyd County as storms lashed the south-eastern state.
The storm struck during a basketball game at the Georgia Dome, sending fans and players running for cover. Friday's 130mph (209km/h) twister left almost 30 people injured and damaged hotels, skyscrapers and sports arenas.
At least nine people have been injured as a result of the storm. Some 10,000 people were still without power on Saturday.
Georgia Power Co said about 10,000 customers had lost power in the area. As the National Weather Service issued a string of tornado warnings on Saturday, a state emergency management official said: "We're bracing for another round of whatever mother nature throws at us."
Falling debris 'Disaster'
"We are doing everything in our power to respond to what we now know was a tornado that came through," said Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin. As officials priced the damage from Friday's twister at up to $200m (£99m), Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue declared it a "disaster".
Meteorologists form the National Weather service would only describe the storm as a "possible tornado", however. Basketball fans watching a game in Atlanta's Georgia Dome had scrambled for cover as the stadium roof rippled and debris rained down.
At the Georgia Dome, witnesses described the stadium roof rippling in the heavy winds, and metal bolts and washers falling onto spectators. The nearby Philips Arena, where the Atlanta Hawks were playing the Los Angeles Clippers, was also hit.
