Road sealed off as woman injured Woman injured in 'vicious attack'

An elderly woman has been badly injured after reports she was attacked during an incident at her Cardiff home. A 77-year-old woman has been attacked by a suspected robber after she opened the door to her Cardiff home.
The woman was injured in a house in Fields Park Road in the Pontcanna area of the city, South Wales Police said. The woman opened her door in Fields Park Road, Pontcanna, at about 0850 GMT and was assaulted by a man, said South Wales Police.
The woman, described as "quiet" and a dog lover, has been taken to hospital with suspected head injuries. She was found by a passer-by about 10 minutes later and taken to hospital where she is in a stable condition with serious head and hand injuries.
Police have sealed off the road and have deployed the force helicopter, There are a number of police vehicles in attendance at the scene. A 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Neighbour Sylvia Greene, 48, said she had known the woman for about a year. Det Supt Paul Kemp, leading the investigation, said: "This was a particularly vicious attack on an elderly defenceless lady in her own home.
"We have made an arrest but are very much keeping an open mind regarding the incident and who is responsible.

"We need people to come forward if they have any information at all about this cowardly attack."
Police said patrols in the area would be stepped up following the incident.
Ch Supt Josh Jones said: "This is a shocking incident and one that people in the community will be very worried about.
"I would like to reassure the people of Cardiff that incidents such as this are rare.
"Police officers were at the scene within short period of time and an arrest has been made."
Detectives are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Fields Park Road, Cathedral Road or Sophia Gardens between 0830 GMT and 0930 GMT to get in touch.
They would like anyone who saw a man acting suspiciously. He may have been wearing a red jacket or he may have removed it.
The woman, described as "quiet" and a dog lover, is in the city's University Hospital of Wales.
