Gascoigne was arrested at another nightclub and is being questioned at a south-west London police station.
Gascoigne is due to return to Chelsea police station in December.
A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "Police were called at approximately 0340 GMT by a 43-year-old man who alleged that he had been assaulted by another man at a club in South Kensington.
He began his career at Newcastle United and also played for clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, Glasgow Rangers, Italian side Lazio, Middlesbrough and Everton.
"Following inquiries, a 39-year-old man was arrested at a separate club nearby at 0415 GMT on suspicion of actual bodily harm and is currently in custody at a south-west London police station."
Gascoigne began his career at Newcastle United and also played for clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, Glasgow Rangers, Italian side Lazio, Middlesbrough and Everton.
