The M6 Thelwall Viaduct has been blocked both ways after seven lorries overturned. There were no casualties. The second day of the prestigious Cheltenham horse racing festival has been abandoned because of high winds.
Meanwhile, the Runcorn-Widnes bridge has been closed to high sided vehicles. Although the course is in good condition, fierce winds made the huge marquees in the tented hospitality area unsafe.
Severe gales
The M6 Thelwall Viaduct closed after three lorries overturned but there were no casualties.
The vehicles have been cleared but the motorway is still closed at Thelwall because of the danger from high winds.
The A533 Runcorn-Widnes bridge has been closed because of an overturned lorry.
The Met Office has warnings of severe gales for all of the UK except northern Scotland and southern England.
The Environment Agency has five flood warnings and 30 flood watches in place.

Areas further south are still clearing up after Monday's storms, which affected transport and left about 30,000 homes without power. BBC weather forecasters say the storm will move into north-west England by the early morning rush-hour, gusting on coasts to as much as 85mph, and 65-75mph inland.
That front brought a top recorded wind speed of 95mph at The Needles on the Isle of Wight.
This time, the low pressure front could bring snow to higher ground in parts of northern England and southern Scotland.
The Environment Agency has a severe flood warning in place for the Kingsway North area of Warrington along with 13 other flood warnings, mainly in north-west England.

BBC weather forecasters say the storm will move into north-west England by the early morning rush-hour, gusting on coasts to as much as 85 mph, and 65-75 mph inland.

Following Monday's storm, the Energy Networks Association, which represents UK energy suppliers, said about 2,400 homes in south-east England, 1,900 in eastern England and 3,000 in south-west England were still without power. Areas further south, which are still clearing up after Monday's storms, escaped the worst of the weather this time.
