Emergency services are trying to free a man trapped inside a mosque after the ceiling partially collapsed. Emergency services have rescued a builder who was trapped inside a mosque when the ceiling partially collapsed.
Another man has already been rescued from the building on Old Devonshire Road at the junction of Balham High Road, south-west London. About 40 firefighters took part in the recovery operation to free Dariusz Naidek, a 28-year-old Polish builder from Tooting, south London.
It is believed building work was being carried out when the incident happened. Another man escaped from the building in Old Devonshire Road, at the junction of Balham High Road, south-west London, with minor injuries.
Old Devonshire Road is closed off following the collapse just after 0900 GMT on Tuesday. Balham High Road remains open. Emergency services were called just after 0900 GMT on Tuesday.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the rescued man suffered cuts and bruises. Mr Naidek's condition is not yet known.
The London Ambulance Service said the air ambulance was on standby to take the trapped man to hospital. 'Difficult conditions'
The Health and Safety Executive and Wandsworth Council have been informed. Vladaimir Dinic, a 40-year-old cabinetmaker, said: "I was passing by and a man ran out in a panic, shouting 'Help, help, my friend is trapped'.
"It looked like the first floor of the building and some of the roof had collapsed completely.
"It looked like a bomb had exploded."
A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: "Forty firefighters worked in very difficult conditions for two-and-a-half hours to release him.
"The building will be handed over to the owners to shore up. An investigation has been launched."
The Health and Safety Executive and Wandsworth Council have been informed of the incident.
