Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett said Monday that he is in good health following back surgery earlier this month.

Leggett (D) was out of the office and home recuperating for 10 days following surgery to alleviate symptoms of spinal stenosis, a compression of nerves in the back that can cause leg pain.

“I am healthy,” Leggett said at a midday news conference.

The condition is usually associated with advancing age. But Leggett, 71, said he traces the problem to back injuries suffered in a 2009 car accident. The pain was being controlled with medication, Leggett said, until the drug he was taking started causing bleeding in his stomach. That’s when he turned to surgery as an option, he said.

Leggett said he could assure county residents that he will be able to finish his term, which ends in 2018. He said he had only one concern that he mentioned to his surgeon prior to going under the knife: he wanted to be able to continue beat his old friend, biotech entrepreneur Sol Graham, on the tennis court.
