She started her career as a teacher before moving into public relations and journalism, joining ITN as a reporter in the mid-1970s. Barnes went on to present all of ITV's main news programmes, including News at Ten, and worked on the now-defunct ITV News Channel when it opened in 2000.
Barnes was last seen on TV in January presenting an ITV documentary. Sky News presenter Dermot Murnaghan described her as "helpful and caring".
Entitled Saving Ed Mitchell, it was about Barnes' former colleague's struggle with alcoholism. Murnaghan said Barnes looked after him when he joined the organisation in the late 1980s.
