Version 0 of 1.

A train has derailed in central Greece, leaving at least 23 people injured, according to police.

The train, reportedly heading to the north-eastern town of Alexandroupolis from Athens, is said to have come off the tracks near the town of Larissa.

At least five carriages derailed. Emergency crews smashed windows to rescue those trapped inside.

Six people suffered serious injuries and have been taken to hospital, Reuters news agency reports.

The agency reported that authorities were investigating the cause of the crash, but believed a malfunction in the track switching mechanism might be at fault.

The crash comes at the beginning of a long holiday weekend, ahead of the first day of the Greek Orthodox Lenten season.
