French fighter jets launched air strikes against Isis targets in Syria on Sunday night, two days after the group claimed responsibility for the coordinated attacks in Paris that killed 129 people.

The bombing raids were France’s biggest to date in Syria and were directed at the de facto ‘capital’ of Raqqa.

12 fighter jets set off from bases in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates and dropped 20 bombs on Isis strongholds late on Sunday evening.

According to a statement released by the French Ministry of Defence, the first target that the planes destroyed was a command post, which housed a recruitment centre and arms and munitions depot.

The second target to be destroyed in the raid was a "terrorist training camp".

The operation came just hours after Paris and Washington pledged to step up the campaign against Isis in response to Friday’s terrorist attacks.
