The area around a key downtown Washington intersection was shut down early Monday morning after someone was reported to be barricaded there while undergoing a mental health crisis. The situation ended shortly before 5 a.m. when police said the subject was contained.

The George Washington University issued an advisory to its campus community around 3 a.m. describing an “active shooter” situation in the area of 19th and K streets, but police this morning said that the incident had not been an active shooter situation.

The GWU advisory urged that the area be avoided. An update at 3:50 a.m. said an armed suspect was contained within an office building and that no injuries were reported.

Streets in the area were closed by the police response and the ensuing investigation. Police said information on street closures for Monday morning would be made available on the department’s Twitter site, @DCPolicedept

Meanwhile, a stabbing was reported in the 1200 block of Connecticut Avenue shortly after 3 a.m. The site is three or four blocks from the barricade scene. It was not clear if the incidents were connected.

The K Street corridor is lined with office buildings housing many law firms and lobbyists.
