A Silver Spring man who was shot after answering his front door has stabilized, and his family is questioning why he was attacked.

Joshua Bart, 47, is hospitalized after being shot in the abdomen on Thursday, his family said. Montgomery County police said Bart answered the door of his home in the 9500 block of Clement Road shortly before 7 p.m., and a confrontation took place between him and two men.

Bart told police one of the men shot him and then both fled. Bart’s 7-year-old son was home at the time, police said. Bart was rushed to the hospital in serious condition and has undergone surgery.

“He cares about other people,” said Bart’s sister, Jessica Bart. “He’s a great dad. We all love him.”

Police have described the shooting as “not random” and said there is no threat to the community, but Montgomery County Capt. Paul Starks said Saturday he could not release additional details because of the ongoing investigation. He said detectives are exploring a number of avenues.

Bart is a massage therapist who works partly out of his home, family members said. He is also a widower; his wife died in June 2014. Kenneth Bart, Joshua’s father, said the family has learned little about the shooting so far.

“We have no idea at all” why someone would shoot him, Bart said. “My family is really focused on my son’s recovery.”
