Version 0 of 1.

In a violent afternoon in the District, five people — three of them juveniles — were shot in a span of about three hours. One woman died in one of the shootings, which police said may have resulted from an attempted robbery.

First, two juveniles were wounded at about 3:20 p.m. just after they got off a Metrobus at East Capitol Street and Benning Road, a busy bus interchange next to the Benning Road Metro station. A Metro spokeswoman said that after being struck, one of the youths got back on the bus, apparently to reach a safe place.

Then a juvenile staggered out of an alley in Southeast and collapsed from a gunshot wound to his side. He was hospitalized in serious condition after the 4 p.m. shooting at Randall Place and Alabama Avenue SE, D.C. police said.

And just before 6:30 p.m., a man and a woman were shot on the 4200 block of Edson Place NE.

Police spokesman Hugh Carew said that the woman, who was shot in the back, died of her injuries. The man was shot in the leg.

Initially, police did not identify suspects in any of the shootings.

Police are investigating the confrontation on Edson Place, in the Deanwood area, as a potential robbery. The tree-lined residential street of rowhouses and a few boarded-up buildings was populated by several pedestrians at the time of the incident.

It was not immediately clear whether the two people shot were involved in the robbery or were bystanders.
