A baby boy arrived safe and well despite being born in a car at the side of a road in Cornwall.

Rush-hour traffic and being caught behind a learner driver meant a couple, from St Stephens, did not have time to finish the 20-minute drive to hospital.

Paul Swiggs ended up delivering his 6lb 12oz son Connor, the couple's third child, in the car.

"I wrapped the baby in my jumper and we finished the five-minute drive to Penrice hospital," Jane Swiggs said.

'Sheer panic'

"I realised we wouldn't make it to the hospital and told Paul to pull over, to which he replied 'no you'll be fine'," Mrs Swiggs said.

"But he got the fright of his life when he looked over and saw the baby was coming.

"He was in sheer panic, but I managed to stay quite calm. Connor's my third baby, although I didn't realise he'd arrive quite so quickly.

"Thankfully, the two little ones were at home being looked after by my mum."

The baby was given a clean bill of health by the hospital and is now back at home with his big brothers, four-year-old Alex and Luke, who is 15 months.
