Man dies as wind storm hits Alps
(about 11 hours later) | |
A 47-year-old British man was killed in Austria when the taxi he was in was hit by a boulder during wind storm Emma.
Mark Huddlestone, of Widnes, Cheshire, was involved in the accident a short time after landing at Salzburg International Airport on Saturday.
He was on his way to a skiing holiday hotel at Soll in the Tyrol area when winds of up to 150mph caused snow and boulders to crash through trees.
One of the rocks crushed the roof of the car he was travelling in.
Another man, a 41-year-old British friend of Mr Huddlestone's, is believed to have been uninjured in the accident.
Mr Huddlestone, a businessman, had been going skiing in the area for several years.
A Foreign Office spokesman said Mr Huddlestone's family were being offered consular support.
High-speed winds from Hurricane Emma have been buffeting parts of northern Europe over the past few days. |
