A sixth-month-old baby girl has died after being thrown from the window of an apartment building in New York City.

The baby, named as Janillah Lawrence, fell from the sixth floor of the property in Fordham Heights, in the Bronx, on Thursday.

She was found unconscious on the pavement and was later pronounced dead at St Barnabas hospital.

Her mother, named as Tenisha Fearon, has been charged with second-degree murder, according to The New York Times.

Detective Brian Sessa, a spokesman for the New York Police Department, said: “The baby was sent out the window not by her own regard.”

Police reportedly received a call on Thursday afternoon saying that a baby was being dangled out of the window.

A neighbour said Fearon and three other children could be seen in the apartment, all naked.

Fearon was taken into police custody and also to hospital for an evaluation before being charged, according to The New York Times.

The other children - all aged 10 years and under - were also taken to hospital although it is not believed they were suffering from any injuries.

Christopher McKniff, a spokesman for New York’s Administration for Children’s services, said in a statement: “We are currently investigating the circumstances that led to this tragic incident and are actively working to ensure the well-being of the three remaining children in the household.”

The tragedy is the third case of a baby being thrown out of an apartment window in New York City since August.
