Ripped down by the Communists as a symbol of Prussian militarism, it was replaced by an ugly Palace of the Republic. After reunification, the new Germany ripped down that asbestos-filled building, choosing controversially to rebuild the schloss — or at least its facade.Mr. MacGregor leaves the by year’s end, and while his loss to Britain is greatly mourned, again, he has chosen a wider view.
