Anglers angry at river pollution

Anglers in County Antrim have said they are angry that not enough is being done to stop industrial pollution pouring into a local river.

The Six Mile Water which runs through the south of the county has been described as one of the best fishing rivers in Northern Ireland.

In August, silt from a nearby drain started spilling into the water.

Allan Kirkpatrick from Antrim and District Angling Association reported the matter to the authorities.

However, he said the pollution had continued on an almost daily basis for the past three months.

His club has suffered a loss of three quarters of their fishing stock as a result.

The group said the pollution clogged the gills of fish causing stress and death and settles on spawning reeds stopping fish from breeding.

The angling association said its campaign had been bolstered by the Ulster Angling Federation and Friends of the Earth.
