Detectives investigating the murder of 13-year-old Milly Dowler said they were pursuing 97 new leads following an appeal for witnesses.

Surrey Police said some of the calls were "potentially significant" and they were pleased with the response.

A renewed appeal was issued on Monday after Levi Bellfield, who has been identified as a prime suspect, was convicted of murdering two young women.

Milly disappeared in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, on 21 March 2002.

Detectives have linked Bellfield to her abduction because his girlfriend lived nearby and a car the same colour and model as her red Daewoo Nexia was captured on CCTV footage taken in Walton-on-Thames on the day Milly went missing.

£50,000 reward

Officers have released the vehicle registration, N503 GLT, and chassis number, KLATF68V1SB554108, of the vehicle in an attempt to trace it.

The body of Milly was discovered on Yateley Heath, Hampshire, six months after she disappeared on the way home from school.

A reward of £50,000 is on offer for information that leads to her killer.

Bellfield was given three life sentences on Tuesday after being found guilty of the murders of two young female students and the attempted murder of a third in south-west London in 2003 and 2004.

Scotland Yard is also reviewing the deaths of Patsy Morris in 1980 and widow Judith Gold in 1990.

Patsy Morris, 14, who it has been reported that Bellfield dated, was discovered in undergrowth near her home in Hounslow.

Judith Gold was found near the High Street in Hampstead, north London, with serious head injuries.
