Protesters scale Parliament roof Brown condemns Commons roof demo
(10 minutes later)
Anti-Heathrow expansion protesters have climbed on to the roof of the Houses of Parliament next to Big Ben. Gordon Brown has criticised a group of anti-Heathrow expansion campaigners protesting on the roof of Parliament.
The six campaigners unfurled banners, including one saying "No 3rd runway at Heathrow", and threw paper planes. During prime minister's questions, he said: "Decisions in this country should be made in the chamber of this House and not on the roof of this House."
The protesters said they had got to the roof via a fire escape. Police said there was a "strong possibility" they were guests of security pass holders. Earlier, six campaigners unfurled banners from Parliament, including one saying "No third runway at Heathrow".
Gordon Brown's spokesman said the security breach was a "matter for the parliamentary authorities". Police said there was a "strong possibility" the protesters were guests of Westminster security pass holders.

One of the group, who said he was called Richard George, told the BBC he intended to continue the protest until at least prime minister's questions at noon. The rooftop incident, which started at about 0930 GMT, comes two days after a similar protest when banners were draped over a plane at Heathrow.
