People from as far afield as London, Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester, East Anglia and Yorkshire felt the tremor. People in Newcastle, Yorkshire, London, Manchester, the Midlands and Norfolk felt the tremor at about 0100 GMT.
It struck just before 0100 GMT and lasted for nearly 10 seconds but it is unclear if it has caused any damage. An elderly man suffered leg injuries when a chimney collapsed in Wombwell in South Yorkshire, emergency crews said.
The British Geological Survey (BGS) said it believed the quake was of the magnitude of 5.3 and said the epicentre was in Market Rasen in Lincolnshire. Dr Brian Baptie of the BGS said it was of a level to cause minor damage to buildings. Bev Finnegan, who lives in Market Rasen, said: "I was terrified to be honest. The noise was really, really terrifying... it was so deep and rumbling.

"It felt like the roof was going to fall in. There were people coming out in their dressing gowns wondering what it was. It was quite an experience."
