A man has been found nailed to pieces of wood outside a flat in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.

The assault happened in School Lane, Dewsbury Moor, near the home of missing schoolgirl Shannon Matthews, but police said there was no link to the inquiry.

An ambulance spokeswoman said the 43-year-old man was taken to hospital in Dewsbury for emergency treatment.

His injuries were not believed to be serious, a West Yorkshire Police spokesman added.

Some reports have said the man was found by neighbours nailed by his hands to a makeshift wooden cross.

The scene of the incident, part of a two-storey block of flats, was cordoned off while detectives carried out an investigation.
