Iraq: Baghdad market bombings kill at least 14 Iraq: Baghdad market bombings kill at least 23
(about 1 hour later)
At least 14 people have been killed in multiple bomb attacks in Baghdad, Iraqi police say. Islamic State (IS) militants say they were behind two suicide bombs in Iraq's capital, Baghdad, that killed at least 23 people and wounded more than 60.
Dozens of others were injured in the blasts, which struck mainly Shia neighbourhoods in the capital. The attacks targeted police checkpoints in the Wathba and Haraj markets during morning rush-hour, police said.
At least two of the attacks were caused by suicide bombers at police checkpoints in market places. The bombers were said to have been on foot and wearing explosives vests.
It is not known who was behind the attacks, which were similar to previous bombings carried out by insurgents from so-called Islamic State (IS). The Reuters news agency said four people were killed in a third blast in the nearby Bab al-Muadham district, but it is unclear who was behind it.
The bombers hit Wathba and Haraj markets during morning rush-hour, killing police and civilians. Fighters from the IS group have carried out numerous suicide bombings and other attacks against civilian and government targets in and around Baghdad.
